Smell Like A Man

February 16 2012

Old spice is advertising their products to catch the attention of the men in our society. Their commercials are encouraging these men to purchase and use this products for the benefits of attracting the female species. Surprisingly their tack ticks are increasing the production of Old spice products through out the society. These commercials seem to subvert ideas about masculinity world wide by presenting a variety of muscular men and demonstrating their ability to look good and smell good like a real MAN.......
These commercial below clearly send us the message of MASCULINITY, the catch is that only real men with huge body muscles use this product and when you do use it, you will not only smell good but have the POWER.  Their slogan " SMELL IS POWER", is catching a lot of attention. Mainly for the young guys, who are using the Old SPICE products to boost some confidence for their girlfriends.

Old Spice commercials are entertaining, but what kind of a message are they really trying to convey to the viewer. What if they substitute the muscular man in this commercial with a skinny dude who is a blue collar man in our society. Would they still be able to send the same message or would the people stop buying these products????????????
C'MON MAN

  1. Every time I see Ray Lewis in that old spice commercial where he is a cloud(or something), I just want to say C'MON MAN. Even the commercial with the bear is pretty ridiculous, yet entertaining. But to look into the former commercial further, he is supposed to look like a total idiot;yet despite (what i'm guessing) is supposed to be a fluffy/soft appearance, because he is Ray Lewis, it doesn't matter what he is wearing. Ray Lewis will always be an example of ideal masculinity as an athlete and physical specimen. Ray Lewis is known for his hits and rough style of play. Advertisers do a similar thing with the Polamalu Head and Shoulders commercials and old spice Ehrlacher commercials. As football players, they are role models, morally to children and physically to older men. Male-oriented commercials use humor to get through to its core audience, and to sell them products that have previously been associated with femininity.

  2. The Old Spice commercials remind me of the Axe commercials. In the Axe commercials, they show an average guy using Axe, then women being magically attracted to them. The Axe chocolate commercial showed a guy that sprayed himself with Axe chocolate. He turned to a chocolate human, then women started following him and taking bites of him. With Old Spice, every spray you receive more POWER! If they would use an blue collar worker, they would not get the same effect. They are trying to market theses products to males who think they are lacking masculinity. Personally im not offended by these commercials, I find them very entertaining and a fan of Terry Crews.

  3. From a women's perspective, these commercials are hilarious. Strictly because they are the farthest from the truth. Sorry guys, but women do not walk into a room and say, "Oh I wanna date that guy" strictly because of how they smell. It doesn't work that way. Not only is it giving false hope, it is making women seem shallow. It is making women seem like they are only interested by how a man smells. Personally, I am not attracted by smell. I don't see the appeal.

  4. I personally love the Old Spice commercials that Bruce Campbell is in. I think they are hillarious. It seems though that they have changed. Bruce Campbell is the epitomy of comedy. Whereas, these new commercials seem to be embodying more than just funny commentary. The use of muscular men is not a new thing, but it seems it is for these new Old Spice commercials. Even before Bruce Campbell though, I remember it being an older man with a grey beard that seemed to be a dock fisherman. It seems the definition of what it means to be a man is ever changing, by definition of Old Spice.
